Mike Deeson retires after 35 years at WTSP…

In an announcement on Facebook yesterday, veteran WTSP investigative reporter Mike Deeson announced that he had retired from the Tampa station.

He said on Facebook (edited): “I know this will come as a surprise to many of my friends in Tampa Bay, but I have decided to retire from Channel 10 effective today. This will give me the time to put more effort into many of other projects I have been trying to juggle while working full time.

At 68 years old, it’s something I have been thinking about for a while especially because of the changing landscape of TV news, and I know this is the right time.

Also, I didn’t want the long goodbye tour; I would rather rip off the bandage and go forward with my decision immediately. My nature is to come to a conclusion and act on it quickly without looking back.

Timing in a decision like this is always critical. As some of my friends know, I’m finishing up a book about my almost 50 years in the business that is extremely frank and I’ve always thought it would be better to try to get it published after I left the station .

I want to thank all the people who have been so kind to me over the years…the viewers, my colleagues, the friends I have made. I have loved every minute I’ve spent with all of you.

To everything there is a season- for now, this is my season to leave Channel 10.

Deeson started at WTSP in 1982, coming from WAVY-TV in Norfolk. He has worked in Jackson, Sagniaw, Flint, Rochester and Buffalo.
