WFTV blasts WOFL & WESH over exclusive…

(from OrlandoSentinel.com) – WFTV-Channel 9 news director Bob Jordan is furious with competitors WOFL-Channel 35 and WESH-Channel 2. Jordan accuses the stations of swiping WFTV’s exclusive interview with Fathima Rifqa Bary, the teen who fled her Muslim family in Ohio. “You can’t steal someone else’s work and pass it off as your own,” Jordan said. “They will make a fair-use claim under the copyright law. But this is pretty transparent theft. They knew it was our work. They could have acknowledged that it was WFTV’s work.” A spokeswoman for WOFL said: “We were within our legal rights to use the clip.” Backing up Jordan was Dale Cohen, associate general counsel for Cox Enterprises, which is a parent company of WFTV. Cohen said: “From our perspective, an essential element of fair use is you properly credit the source of the information. In this case, we don’t feel like that happened.” The interview by reporter Mary Nguyen aired on WFTV earlier this week, then turned up on YouTube. Later Rifqa’s comments to Nguyen were seen on WOFL and WESH. WESH credited the footage as “courtesy of YouTube.” WOFL said an extended interview with the girl had been posted on YouTube…..Cont for the rest of the story…..
