WTVT veteran meteorologist Andy Johnson announced today that he will be retiring from the Tampa station, after thirty three years. A native of Tampa, Andy grew up watching WTVT and eventually joined the station in August of 1979. He posted the following message on his Facebook page earlier today:
It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing my intention to retire from WTVT after 33 years serving the Tampa Bay Area. I am fortunate to have been blessed with having worked with such professional colleagues and followed by such loyal viewers. Being a meteorologist for WTVT was a childhood dream of mine, which I was able to fulfill. Tampa is my home and always will be. So, if you see me around town, please say “Hi”!
So far there is no word on if Johnson’s departure was his choice or if he was forced out. We here at Florida News Center are assuming the later, for the further blond-i-fication of Fox and its stations. Johnson did not give any word on what he will do after retiring from WTVT. Stay tuned for any further information.
As someone who grew up watching Tampa TV news, I always hate to see the veterans go. Good luck to Andy Johnson in all of his future endeavors and kudos on a fantastic career!
