WJAX/WFOX get approval to fly news drones…

(edited from – WJAX/WFOX are the only local stations in the Jacksonville media market to be granted Federal Aviation Administration approval to fly a drone as part of their news coverage.

Independence dominates the May books in JAX…

Jacksonville independent station WJXT has once again demonstrated that a local station does not need a network affiliation to win in the ratings. Check out the May 2015 numbers below for the market.

(edited from WJXT Press Release) – In Morning News, WJXT at 5am is #1 in the time period with a 3.4 household and #1 at 5:30am with a 4.8 household rating.  The 5am newscast beat the combined competition of WTLV/WJXX, WJAX and WFOX by 183% and 5:30am beat them by 167%.  Channel 4 News at 6am is #1 in household ratings in the 6-7am time period garnering a 7.0 household rating and a 24 share (compared to WTLV/WJXX 3.4 RTG/12 SHR, WFOX 1.7 RTG/6 SHR and WJAX 1.6 RTG/5 SHR). The Morning Show (7-9am), is #1 in the time period with a 6.3 HH rating and a 19 share beating out all other newscasts including the national broadcasts of NBC’s Today Show on WTLV (2.3 RTG/7 SHR), CBS This Morning on WJAX (1.7 RTG/5 SHR) and ABC’s Good Morning America on WJXX (2.6 RTG/8 SHR).  Read the rest of this entry →

UPDATE: Mark Spain finds work outside of JAX…

UPDATE: 04/15/2015 – Former WTEV/WAWS anchor Mark Spain announced on Twitter today that he has landed at WSET-TV, Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA.


(edited from – 03/25/15 – Former WJAX/WFOX anchor Mark Spain is leaving the Jacksonville market for another broadcasting job.

Spain was one of five anchors, who were jettisoned from the news operations there last summer. Spain, who had remained in Jacksonville, has not been on the air in local TV news since leaving the duopoly, but Wednesday he confirmed he’s agreed to a broadcast news job outside of North Florida.

Spain said he would not be more specific on his relocation due to a pre-employment agreement that limits disclosure of the job prior to taking to the air. Read the rest of this entry →

A profile of the JAX media market….

(edited from –  The people who have watched local TV news the longest never have seen anything like the upheaval currently unfolding in the Jacksonville market.

The underdog, WJAX/WFOX Action News, is barking for attention and getting it. The No. 2 station, WTLV/WJXX First Coast News, found that crime alone does not pay.

Former TV newsers get into the food business…

Former WJAX/WFOX anchor Lynnsey Gardner, who parted ways with the duopoly this past summer, has decided to get into the food business.

She and her husband, former WJAX/WFOX reporter Bryan Baker, who left the stations a year ago are teaming up with a local Jacksonville area eatery to expand the chain into other cities.

Baker has been working the grill at Maple Street Biscuit Company for the past two months and will now run the original location. Gardner will help to open a new St. Augustine location, but admits that she is “keeping her options open.” Read the rest of this entry →
