Ybeth Bruzual calls out Gov. Rick Scott…

(from HuffingtonPost.com) – Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has spent $13.5 million on reelection ads for television, most of it in Central Florida.

But that doesn’t mean he wants to talk on television — and one Orlando news anchor is seriously over it. News 13′s Ybeth Bruzual spent nearly two minutes of air time calling out Scott for dodging her and her show, “Political Connections.”

Bruzual said Florida’s other major gubernatorial candidates including Charlie Crist (D) have appeared on “Political Connections,” but Scott’s campaign had repeatedly declined to commit to an appearance. Then, she said, his staff reached out and requested to appear on News 13′s Spanish language sister station InfoMás to discuss his Hispanic outreach program.

InfoMás initially agreed to the interview, but everything fell apart when producers informed Scott’s staff that Bruzual would conduct the interview and it would appear across all of the platforms owned by parent company Brighthouse Cable, including News 13 and a station in Tampa Bay….Cont….

Burn, baby, burn…2013!

For the twelfth year, Tampa’s Bright House Cable news channel Bay News 9 and Orlando’s News 13 will be airing the burning “Yule Log” on the cable channels from 7:00pm to midnight on Christmas Eve.

Bright House customers can watch the burning Yule Log anytime by going to OnDemand channel 999 in the Tampa and Orlando cable markets. For 2013, Bright House offers three versions of the Yule Log with differing fire places; “Holiday Tradition,” “Christmas Angel,” and “Chimenea Navidena” in Spanish.

The burning fireplace (Yule log) tradition was first started in 1966, by New York’s WPIX. Watch a history of the WPIX Yule Log and vintage WPIX Yule Log broadcasts, via the YouTube video below. Enjoy!

A new era for Central Florida News 13…

Orlando’s Central Florida News 13 began a new era today as the 24hr cable only station debuted a new logo, a new name, website (mynews13.com), news music, graphics package, and minor set changes on their Tuesday noon newscast. The station has been slowly phasing out the “Central Florida” part of its name over the past several years and has now fully adopted “News 13″ as its official moniker. The station is now using the slogan “News. Weather. Now.”

As Florida News Center learned nearly two weeks ago, the Bright House Networks cable-only station began to set into effect the even further merging of it’s Tampa and Orlando properties. The new “News 13″ is now a twin of its Tampa sister station, Bay News 9. Both stations now share the same music, slogan, similar logos, and set styling. Sources tell Florida News Center that the new graphics package introduced today on News 13 will eventually be adopted on Bay News 9 as well. Stay tuned for any further information.

Check out News 13′s new look below and a hybrid image where not all of the graphics are quite updated yet…

WFLA & Bright House make nice…

(from TampaBay.com) – Bright House Networks customers got a welcome New Year’s present Monday, as the company announced a last-minute deal with Media General to keep the Virginia-based media chain’s TV stations on its system, including Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA-Ch. 8.

But the deal, reportedly reached an hour before the midnight deadline on New Year’s Eve, follows the pattern of several recent conflicts between cable and satellite companies and broadcasters. (considering that Bright House has more than a million households in its system in the Tampa Bay area, NBC’s affiliate disappearing from the system would have hurt everyone from NBC Universal to viewers without access to other systems or a broadcast antenna….Cont….

WFLA and Bright House duke it out…

TV viewers are once again subjected to retransmission fights between a local station (and its owner) and a television provider. This time Tampa’s WFLA-TV (Media General) and BrightHouse Networks cable are in negotiations for a new signal transmission agreement. If WFLA and Bright House do not come to an agreement before January 1, 2013, the station will be pulled from local cable line-ups.

Of course this grand standing is nothing new to television and is usually always resolved from signals are pulled. However, WFLA is not taking any chances and has been encouraging its viewers to switch to other providers, via segments in every newscast, crawls on the top and bottom of national simulcasts and via a special website (www.DONTDROPWFLA.com). Stay tuned….
