Jim Reif dies after bicycle accident…

UPDATE: 04/08/14 @ 15:03 – We are sad to report that WBBH’s Jim Reif died at 10:38pm last night. The meteorologist died of brain injuries suffered in a bicycle accident this past Sunday. Read the story below the video.

04/07/14 (edited from – WBBH NBC2 Director of Meteorology Jim Reif was involved in a tragic bicycle accident Sunday afternoon and is currently in grave condition.

While riding his bike on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, his bicycle hit a sign, throwing him to the ground. Jim hit his head on the curb and suffered traumatic injuries to the head.

First responders were able to get to the scene in a matter of minutes because the accident happened less than a mile away from the fire station. It’s unclear what caused the accident.

Jim Reif is a household name in Southwest Florida. In 1979, Jim began his television career in Fort Myers and he quickly earned his reputation as a hurricane specialist. He joined Waterman Broadcasting in 1999 as the Chief Meteorologist for ABC7, and more recently he moved to NBC2 and became the Director of Meteorology for the company’s television stations….Cont….

Patrick bumped to chief at WZVN…

Fort Myers’ WZVN-TV has named staff meteorologist John Patrick as the new chief meteorologist.  Patrick moves into the big chair, replacing long-time chief Jim Reif, who was moved to the noon time slots (at WZVN and sister station WBBH), this past April. Patrick joined WZVN in 2005.

A change in the weather at WBBH/WZVN…

(from – Lots of shuffling is going on at sister stations WZVN ABC7 and WBBH NBC2 as the weather departments at both stations undergo major overhauls.

The headline out of these latest schedule changes: longtime meteorologist Jim Reif is moving from the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on ABC7 to the 11 a.m. and noon newscasts on NBC2.

That’s significant because Reif is one of the longest-serving forecasters not just in this market, but in the country. He started on-air in Southwest Florida way back in 1979 – 32 years ago. He was the chief meteorologist at WINK-TV for many years until ABC7 lured him away in 1999. Now he’s going to be appearing on NBC2….Cont….
