Jim Van Fleet files suit against former station/bosses…

(edited from TampaBay.com) – Former 10Weather WTSP chief meteorologist Jim Van Fleet has filed a lawsuit against his former TV station and two managers, claiming two managers there conspired to oust him from the job.

He claims the managers defamed him by spreading false rumors that he was using drugs and set him up for disciplinary action so they could name meteorologist Bobby Deskins as his replacement.

The lawsuit filed last month in Pinellas County Circuit Court describes Van Fleet as an “exemplary” employee since signing a five-year contract with the station in 2011. But four years into the contract — and one month after a positive performance review conducted by general manager Elliot Wiser — things started to go south for Van Fleet, the suit says. FTVLive reports that WTSP Chief Meteorologist Jim Van Fleet is out at the Tampa station.

The website says that station GM “Bob Clickingbeard escorted Van Fleet out the door” Wednesday afternoon and his bio was quickly removed from the station’s website. There was no reason given for Van Fleet’s departure.

A rare sight in TV news…

Check out this picture below that I took at the Tampa Museum of Science and Industry’s Hurricane Expo this weekend. The chief meteorologists from all five Tampa market stations were at the event to discuss the upcoming hurricane season and answer questions. Yours truly wrangled these guys all together for a rare photo opportunity after the Q&A. Thanks to all five for chatting and for humoring me.

Van Fleet rebuts WOFL/Orlando dis…

(from our friend Roger Simmons) – Former WOFL-Fox 35 morning meteorologist Jim Van Fleet is settling into his new role as chief met at Tampa’s WTSP-CBS 10. However, he’s still a bit unsettled by reaction to an interview he gave — and he wants to set the record straight.

This all began with an early December blog post by St. Petersburg Times TV writer Eric Deggans, who talked to Van Fleet about his new job at WTSP. Here’s what Deggans wrote:  “I’m actually here … and allowed to be on air,” joked Van Fleet, referring to the contract issues which kept him from appearing on WTSP until his agreement with Orlando Fox station WOFL-TV fully expired. “That was Triple A, and now I’m ready for the majors.”….Cont….

Van Fleet debuts on WTSP, takes a swipe at WOFL…

(from TampaBay.com) – In what some might call a “soft launch,” St. Petersburg CBS affiliate WTSP-Ch. 10 saw its chief meterologist Jim Van Fleet make his debut in the station’s 5 p.m. newscast Monday — nearly four months after they announced his hire.

“I’m actually here…and allowed to be on air,” joked Van Fleet Monday, referring to the contract issues which kept him from appearing on WTSP until his agreement with Orlando Fox station WOFL-TV fully expired. “That was Triple A, and now I’m ready for the majors.”

Van Fleet worked at WOFL for 10 years, but when he accepted the offer from WTSP, the Orlando station wouldn’t let him out of his contract early, forcing the Tampa Bay area station to wait months for a key player in its weather team….Cont….
