More news for, anchor changes at WFLA/WTTA…

Tampa’s WFLA announced today that the station would begin producing a nightly, hour-long live 8 p.m. newscast, which will air on Media General sister station WTTA Great 38. The new newscast begins on January 4 and will be anchored by Jenn (Jennifer) Holloway & Josh Benson, with weather by Julie Philips.

This new newscast on WTTA will be market’s first and only 8 p.m. newscast. Currently, WFLA offers a live 30 minute 7 p.m. newscast on WFLA proper, anchored by Jennifer Leigh. Read the rest of this entry →

Josh Benson fired from WFOR…

(from – //hattip to – WFOR, the CBS-owned station in South Florida, has fired morning anchor Josh Benson.

“WFOR-TV has terminated the employment of Josh Benson for his operation of a personal website that streamed the station’s newscasts without the knowledge and consent of the station,” the station said in a statement.

Benson’s Twitter page and personal site are both down as of this writing. Before coming to WFOR last August, Benson was an evening anchor at WFTV in Orlando….Cont….

WFTV to produce 6:30pm newscast on WRDQ…

(from – Diane Sawyer is getting some new competition, and it’s coming from the people who air her evening newscast in Orlando.

ABC affiliate WFTV-Channel 9 announced this morning that it will add a 6:30 p.m. weekday newscast on sister station WRDQ-Channel 27. The newscast will compete with the hugely popular ABC “World News” on WFTV and debut in September to coincide with the fall TV season.

“I don’t think you’re going to see a reduction in ABC ‘World News’ at all,” said Shawn Bartelt, general manager of WFTV and WRDQ. “You’ll see people who want local news at 6:30 coming to WRDQ. You’ll have the viewer who doesn’t get home until 6:30 and wants local news and weather.”

Vanessa Welch will co-anchor with newcomer Josh Benson at 6:30. Benson, a morning anchor at KVOA in Tucson, joins her on the 10 p.m. WRDQ newscast starting July 6.…Cont….

Coming to WFTV…to replace Opsahl?

(edited from – KOVA NBC 4 morning news co-anchor Josh Benson, who has been at the Tuscon, AZ station since 2005, is leaving at the end of May for Orlando, Fla., where he is going to be the weekend news anchor at ABC-affiliate WFTV.

“I’m finally going to be able to sleep in again,” Benson said about his upcoming move.

WFTV is owned by Cox Enterprises — parent of the company that owns Tucson’s cable system — and has been Orlando’s news ratings leader for most of the last 20 years. The station’s main weekday anchorman, Bob Opsahl, has been in that position since 1984 and the word is he is planning to retired in about a year, which could propel Benson into the top spot in the market if things work out. Benson said the decision to move on was simply a desire to “continue to grow in this industry.” An agent he had hired within the past year connected him with the opportunity at WFTV….Cont….
