WTVT quietly cancels “Your Turn”…

Over the past few weeks, Florida News Center has received several e-mails inquiring about WTVT’s noon talk segment, Your Turn. We have since learned that WTVT has quietly canceled the talk segment, which has bookended the end of the station’s weekday, hour long, noon newscasts since its inception in 1997.

Your Turn has slowly been cut over recent years. The segment was reduced from thirty five to fifteen minutes, after former host and WTVT anchor Kathy Fountain (left) retired from the station in Dec 2009. Morning anchor Russell Rhodes (right) has served as the Your Turn host since Jan 2010.

Sources tell Florida News Center that Rhodes’ schedule has recently shifted to earlier editions of Good Day Tampa Bay (which now runs from 4:30am-9am). Rhodes’ schedule change, in addition to a lack of production staff at the station (thanks to budget/staff cuts) has led to the downfall of Your Turn. The segment has officially been discontinued and the Your Turn section on the station’s website has been removed. The Your Turn brand will still, however be used for viewer feedback segments during newscasts.

Kathy Fountain signs off WTVT…

It was a sad day at Tampa’s WTVT Wednesday, as veteran anchor Kathy Fountain signed off from her position on the station’s 5pm newscast. Fountain had been with WTVT for twenty four years, almost twenty of those anchoring with fellow 5pm anchor woman Denise White. Florida News Center would like to say kudos on a fantastic career and for your outstanding work on WTVT. You will be greatly missed!  Watch FNC on YouTube video below of her final newscast.

Fountain signs off today…

(from TBO.com) Kathy Fountain signs off on her last “Your Turn” today with a look back over a 24-year career at WTVT, Channel 13. “I’ve had a good run, and I will miss my friends here, but I’m ready for the next phase in my life,” says the longtime Fox 13 anchor-reporter and talk show host. The Lakeland native is leaving to open a therapy and counseling practice on Davis Islands. She says she will specialize in helping women overcome infertility. Taped last week, her last “Your Turn” will have new host Russell Rhodes interviewing Fountain. It airs at 12:30 p.m. “We look back at some of the guests that I’ve interviewed over the years,” she says. “Just about every celebrity and entertainer who passed through town was on the show, as well as local civic leaders and politicians.” “There have been hundreds, from Hulk Hogan to Barbara Bush,” she says. “People like Oliver North and astronaut Alan Shepard and Gennifer Flowers, who claimed she had an affair with Bill Clinton. And I remember Eartha Kitt, in town for ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ She did a handstand on the desk to prove she was still spry in her 70s.”…Cont…

Fountain tapes her last “Your Turn”…

(image/story from TampaBay.com) – From the moment she greeted guests today, looking all Christmas-y in a shimmering red pantsuit, Fox 13 anchor and talk show host Kathy Fountain had trouble keeping the waterworks at bay. At 10:30 a.m. this morning, Fountain taped the very last segment of “Your Turn,” the 35-minute talk show she’s hosted within the noon news for 12 years. It was a retrospective tribute, taped in advance with Russell Rhodes, the morning anchor who will take over a much-shortened 15-minute “Your Turn” on Dec. 31, necessitated by Fountain’s decision to leave the local TV news game after 24 years. Surrounded by about a dozen longtime guests, family members and friends, Fountain talked with Rhodes about the high and low points in her longtime gig, from watching eccentric 70-something performer Eartha Kitt do a handstand on her anchor desk to getting a pie in the face while taping her self-named talk show years ago….Cont…. Wilson to take over for Fountain…

(from TampaBay.com) – When he first came to WTVT-Ch. 13, Mark Wilson’s (right #1) big goal was to anchor with his father, the station’s top male anchor, John Wilson. But now that he’s taking on a big new job — succeeding departing anchor Kathy Fountain (right #2) on the Tampa Fox affiliate’s 5 p.m. newscast — Wilson can’t believe he’s been at the station for a dozen years, leading the station 11 p.m. NewsEdge newscast since its inception in 2005. “What I’ve seen through Kathy and my dad is the importance of deep community ties,” said Wilson, 40, who hopes to anchor more from breaking news scenes after he joins co-anchor Denise White on the 5 p.m. show Dec. 31. “I’ve been fairly involved with the show, doing stories for the program, and I get along terrifically with Denise. I think I’ll fit with the audience pretty well.”…Cont…
