Brendan McLaughlin to depart WFTS…

After 21 years at Tampa’s WFTS, veteran lead anchor Brendan McLaughlin is leaving the station. McLaughlin, who was one of the original anchors who started the news department at WFTS in Dec 1994, will sign off on Dec 18th.

He stated via Press Release: “Having reported on the people and events of my adopted home town for the last 21 years, I’m forever bonded to this special place and to you, my viewers and friends.

Broadcast journalism can be an all-consuming career.  That’s why, after nearly three decades in the business, I’ve decided to take a sabbatical- time to read, travel and explore all the things there was never time for. Afterwards, I plan to get back to work pursuing other projects important to me right here in the Tampa Bay Area.”

Linda Hurtado replaces Denise White at WTVT….

Tampa’s WTVT has named Linda Hurtado co-anchor of the 5 p.m. and anchor of the noon newscasts. She fills the void left by Denise White, who recently retired from the station the day before Thanksgiving.

Hurtado comes to WTVT from up the road at ABC affiliate WFTS. As Florida News Center reported, Hurtado left WFTS in May of this year to “spend more time with her family” and work on her career as an author. Looking back, it looks like that family time might have been used to sit out a non-compete clause.

Prior to her 25 year stint at WFTS, she worked at Wilmington, NC, Fort Myers and Orlando.

I have loved my time working for the E. W. Scripps Company and ABC Action News, working with great friends and accomplished journalists, bringing you stories I hope were relevant and helpful to your lives. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have your support all these years – allowing me to experience some life changing stories that have affected my own life as well as yours.

Right after my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2011, I realized I’ve been running hard for many years both personally and professionally – and that, when the right time came, I wanted to take a break and slow down. That time is now. For many reasons.
