UPDATE: Mark Spain finds work outside of JAX…

UPDATE: 04/15/2015 – Former WTEV/WAWS anchor Mark Spain announced on Twitter today that he has landed at WSET-TV, Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA.


(edited from – 03/25/15 – Former WJAX/WFOX anchor Mark Spain is leaving the Jacksonville market for another broadcasting job.

Spain was one of five anchors, who were jettisoned from the news operations there last summer. Spain, who had remained in Jacksonville, has not been on the air in local TV news since leaving the duopoly, but Wednesday he confirmed he’s agreed to a broadcast news job outside of North Florida.

Spain said he would not be more specific on his relocation due to a pre-employment agreement that limits disclosure of the job prior to taking to the air. Read the rest of this entry →

Former TV newsers get into the food business…

Former WJAX/WFOX anchor Lynnsey Gardner, who parted ways with the duopoly this past summer, has decided to get into the food business.

She and her husband, former WJAX/WFOX reporter Bryan Baker, who left the stations a year ago are teaming up with a local Jacksonville area eatery to expand the chain into other cities.

Baker has been working the grill at Maple Street Biscuit Company for the past two months and will now run the original location. Gardner will help to open a new St. Augustine location, but admits that she is “keeping her options open.” Read the rest of this entry →

Mike Barz is looking for work…

Former WTEV/WAWS morning anchor Mike Barz is currently looking for work. He is being represented by the NYC based N.S. Beinstock Talent Agency, which has posted his full resume and video reel.

As Florida News Center reported back in May, Barz was one of five anchors at the Jacksonville duopoly who were told that their contracts were not being renewed. Cox Media Group, the owners of WTEV/WAWS were “starting over from scratch” to take the station in a different direction.

Paige Kelton stays at WTEV/WAWS, moves to mgmt…

Florida News Center has learned that former lead anchor Paige Kelton will be staying with WTEV/WAWS after all.

In a press release this past Friday, VP/GM Jim Zerwkh announced that Kelton will be moving from the anchor desk to the news management team at the Jacksonville duopoly. She will become the “special projects manager.”

In the release Zerwekh said of Kelton, “Paige has been a dedicated employee of CBS 47/FOX 30 for many years” and that he is “extremely happy that she is transitioning to our management team.” He went on to say that “Paige’s unique skill set and community contacts are valuable assets to CBS 47/FOX30 Action News.”

This announcement comes just three months after Florida News Center reported that the management at Cox Communications, the owners of WTEV/WAWS were “starting over from scratch,” dismissing their entire lead evening and morning anchor teams.

Tenikka Smith joins WTEV/WAWS, as replacement #2…

17:45 UPDATE CORRECTION: We mistakenly reported at the time of story publication, that Tenikka Smith was joining WTEV/WAWS as the station’s new morning anchor, replacing Lynnsey Gardner. However, she will be the duopoly’s new evening anchor. The story has been corrected below.

_________________________________________ reports that Tenikka Smith is leaving Charlotte, NC’s WSOC-TV. She will join Jacksonville duopoly WTEV/WAWS as the new week day evening anchor.

“I am very excited to join the CBS47 and FOX30 Action News family as we continue our mission to provide viewers quality coverage and original content,” Smith said in a statement.

Smith replaces former morning anchor Paige Kelton, who as Florida News Center reported, was told that her contract was not being renewed. Kelton was one of five anchors at the duopoly of WTEV/WAWS that was given this news, The station made the changes because it was “starting over from scratch.”

In early July John Bachman was named as replacement #1 at the stations and now Smith has been named as replacement #2. Who will take the 3rd, 4th, and 5th spots? Stay tuned to Florida News Center for the latest.
