HCSO to cut off WTSP…continued…

Thanks to loyal readers, Florida News Center has found another public admonishment of WTSP by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. In a 9/18/09 press release, the HCSO calls out WTSP and reporter Mike Deeson?for broadcasting?an “innacurate portrayal of the incident” cited in the release linked below.

Various media outlets have reported on an incident involving a citizen whose handgun was discovered inside his briefcase as he reported for jury duty at the Hillsborough County Courthouse.? On Thursday, one media outlet in particular, WTSP-10 Connects, chose to broadcast an inaccurate portrayal of the incident….Cont….

Of course the fur has been flying for a while now on both sides. WTSP/Mike Deeson claim that Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee and the HCSO have been on their case for sometime now. In a Feb 2009, Deeson reported on how David Gee managed to earn $908,312 last year in outside income last year while other Sheriff’s in the area make around $150k. Deeson also raised questions about the worthiness of a $675,000 wall around the HCSO’s Ybor City headquarters.

Sources at WTSP and the HCSO tell Florida News Center that the fight is NOT over.? Stay tuned to Florida News Center for further developements.

Hillsborough County Sherriff to cut off WTSP…

(from press release c/o Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Dept) – The Hillsborough County Sheriff?s Office will no longer extend media notifications to TampaBays10, WTSP television. The decision was made following an incident this afternoon in which WTSP reporter Mike Deeson verbally berated a civilian employee of the Sheriff?s Office in what we believe to be an unethical, abusive and threatening incident of unprofessional conduct. The incident culminated a pattern of similar behavior by Mr. Deeson, which has been allowed to continue by WTSP-Channel 10 management.

This afternoon (September 30, 2009), the Sheriff?s Office conducted a press conference to respond to allegations of police misconduct in a pleading filed in Circuit Court. Channel 10 and Mr. Deeson were not invited to the press conference because of his pattern of abusive conduct toward the Sheriff?s Office and its employees, coupled with Channel 10?s disregard for previous complaints about Mr. Deeson?s conduct.

After he learned about the press conference Mr. Deeson telephoned the Sheriff?s Office Public Information Office and verbally berated Vida Morgan, a civilian secretary who fielded the call. Mr. Deeson screamed at Ms. Morgan and demanded to speak with one of the agency?s Public Information Officers, none of whom were available at the time. After becoming increasingly hostile toward Ms. Morgan, Mr. Deeson told her that he intended to, ??Burn the Sheriff this time.?…….CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REST OF THE RELEASE…..

******************UPDATE*******************

On WTSP’s 6pm newscast the station aired the story (video below), which “partially” caused the problem. The St Petersburg Times Eric Deggins has another part to the story here. The station acknowledges HCSO’s decision and says…

“Managment here at WTSP 10 Connects stands behind Mike Deeson’s reporting but is reaching out to the Sheriff’s Office to discuss it’s concerns.”
