Burn, baby, burn – 2016 – WTSP to air Yule Log…

For the fourth year in a row, Tampa’s WTSP will air its verison of the burning “Yule Log.” This year it air from 6:30-9:30a.m. on Christmas morning.

WTSP started airing the Yule Log in 2013, competing with similar offerings from 24hr cable channel Bay News 9 (and it’s sister station in Orlando, News 13). However, while 2013 was the first year for WTSP, it became the last year for BN9/News 13. After thirteen years (2001-2013) the cable channels put the fire out and killed the tradition for 2014.

The TV Yule Log tradition was started by New York station WPIX-TV, 50 years ago in 1966! That live stream can be found here.

We here at Florida News Center are happy to see the log still burns at WTSP – Merry Christmas to you all.

But WKMG-Channel 6 scored wide leads at noon and 11 p.m. in the ratings period that ended Wednesday.

WESH-Channel 2 eked out a victory over WFTV at 4 p.m.  Read the rest of this entry →

Terrorist gunman calls News 13 during attack…

(edited from MyNews13.com) – In the midst of the chaos early Sunday morning at Pulse nightclub, the team at cable outlet News 13 was covering the story when a producer took an ominous phone call.

“News 13, this is Matt,” is how Matthew Gentili, a producer at News 13, answered the phone and knew something wasn’t right.  (VIDEO HERE)

“I was receiving phone calls from viewers saying, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening? What’s happening in Orlando?” Gentili recalled Tuesday.

Sharing with viewers the horror taking place just a few blocks down the street became Gentili’s first priority — until a phone call made him pause.

“I will never forget the words he said to me,” Gentili said. Read the rest of this entry →

Sister stations help Orlando stations with coverage…

(edited from TVSpy.com) – Continuing coverage of the terrorist attack in Orlando has left local stations spread thin. Sister stations from around the country have been helping with the coverage.

Sources tell Florida News Center that staffs from cable outlet Bay News 9 in Tampa have been sent to Orlando to assist its sister News 13 with coverage. The stations already share resources and some staff.

Cox Media Group-owned WFTV: WJAX-WFOX in Jacksonville, WSB in Atlanta, WFXT in Boston and WHIO in Dayton and its Washington, D.C. bureau sent reporters, photographers and producers to help WFTV. Read the rest of this entry →
