Nexstar Closes on Media General purchase, what’s next?

(edited from – From this day forward, Nexstar Broadcasting Group will be known as Nexstar Media Group.

The name change coincides with Nexstar closing on its acquisition of Media General for $4.6 billion in cash and stock just six days after winning FCC approval.

 The deal swells Nexstar’s portfolio to 171 full-power stations,  in 100 markers covering nearly 39% of TV homes. The new stations include 15 in the top 50 markets.

Florida stations involved in the deal include WFLA/WTTA – Tampa, WMBB – Panama City and WKRG/WFNA – Mobile/Pensacola. Jacksonville’s WCWJ was divested and sold to Graham Media Group, earlier in the year to ensure that the merger deal went through. Read the rest of this entry →

WCWJ to be sold, yet another duopoly for JAX…

In a press release from Graham Holdings Company, the media company has reached an agreement with Nexstar Broadcasting Group and Media General to acquire Jacksonville CW affiliate, WCWJ and WSLS in Roanoke, VA.

So how does this impact the Jacksonville market? Independent WJXT is currently owned by Graham Holdings. The acquisition of WCWJ by Graham will create the third duopoly i that market (WTLV/WJXX by TEGNA and WJAX/WFOX by Cox Media). Tim Deegan sues over photo/name mix-up…

(edited from – Jacksonville meteorologist Tim Deegan has filed suit against a service provider for a local television station, citing defamation of character, after the service provider featured his mugshot next to the headline “Florida man kept three women as sex slaves, police say.”

Although the story was accurate, the alleged offender was a different Timothy Deegan, a certified public accountant who lives in Gainesville.

Deegan, a meteorologist for duopoly WTLV/WJXX, is seeking damages in excess of $75,000, claiming that the publication of the photo cause him financial damage, humiliation and mental anguish. Read the rest of this entry →
