WTLV shuffles programming for the Olympics…

It helps to have a sister station to shuffle much-loved programming over to, when you are obligated to broadcast network programming. In this case, the duopoly of Jacksonville’s WTLV (NBC) and WJXX (ABC) works for WTLV to broadcast NBC Olympic coverage and regular programming can be shifted to WJXX. Some rules of TV – don’t mess with Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy – you will get calls.

WFLA blurs Olympics coverage and advertising…

(from – Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA-Ch. 8 is airing a half-hour broadcast on the games, dubbed The Olympic Zone, that pushes boundaries in  blending advertising and news content.

Billed as “special coverage of the Olympic games,” each show opens at 7:30 p.m. weekdays with an update on the games’ medal count delivered by WFLA sportscaster, Dan Lucas, leading into a show sprinkled with feature stories provided by NBC outside the network’s coverage. One story in Monday’s show, a worshipful piece on how Omega handles timing for all the races, was preceded by a sponsorship message from the company and felt like a slickly-produced infomercial.

But the lines really blur not long into each program, when Lucas turns over the spotlight to Cyndi Edwards, co-host of WFLA’s Daytime talk show, for segments featuring sponsors who have paid to be featured in the broadcast. Edwards does similar work on Daytime, where some guests pay to be featured and the show is produced outside the station’s news department….Cont….

With less than a week until the 2012 Ölympics (in London this year, for those who might be in a coma) begin, Florida NBC affiliates have dusted off and polished their own gold. Check out the NBC Ölympic custom affiliate logos below.

NBC affiliates will share the cost of future Olympics…

(from – NBCUniversal paid $4.3 billion this week for the rights to the Olympics for the next decade, and NBC affiliates are ready to help pick up the tab.

NBC Affiliates chairman Brian Lawlor, Senior VP of the E.W. Scripps stations, tells B&C, “The infrastructure exists to help pay for the Games, as we have in the past. That will continue.”

NBC, which also owns the rights to the 2012 London Olympics, will be covering the Games in 2014 from Sochi, Russia, and in 2016 from Rio de Janeiro….Cont….
