Raycom closes on WWSB/WTXL…

(edited from – Raycom Media’s $68.5 million purchase of Sarasota’s WWSB and Tallahassee’s WTXL from Calkins Media Group, closed this week.

“Raycom Media’s Florida portfolio is significantly enhanced by our expansion into the vibrant Suncoast communities and the important State Capital news center of Tallahassee,” said Don Richards, Raycom Media Group VVP.

The acquisition expands Raycom Media’s reach and presence in Florida. It also owns Fox affiliates WFLX in West Palm Beach and WPGX in Panama City…..Cont….

WPGX lays off eight…

(from – There has been a shake-up in the broadcast media industry in Bay County over the past few weeks.

Raycom Media, owner of WPGX Fox 28 in Panama City, laid off eight workers last month in a downsizing move.

Jeff Rosser, of Raycom Media, said the eight include six full-timers and two part-time employees. Rosser said “the hub” for the Dothan, Ala., and Panama City Fox stations would be located in Birmingham, Ala.

“There have been changes,” Rosser said. “Our industry got reset in 2008 and we are adjusting.”….Cont….

Stations sharing in the Gulf Coast revival…

(from PJ Bednarski – I’ve spent the last several weeks in the panhandle of Florida and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit part of the reason we came here is because, after the BP oil spill, we figured nobody else would.

Now, after having been awed by the beautiful beaches and the natural beauty of this area, I’m also sure we’ll probably never get as good of a deal again. Places from Pensacola to Destin and down into Grayton Beach where we have been staying, are filling up again. Though other parts of the gulf apparently still have serious problems, I have yet to see an oil-drenched seagull and I hope I never do.

Local television advertising, especially in southern markets, will be pushing the Panhandle region hard this spring, helped by a retiree whose gulf spill story in a TV commercial is inspiring people nationwide to vacation here….Cont….

FL Fox affiliates dump Obama for dancing fools…

President Obama’s address to Congress tonight was ignored by most FOX network affiliates across the country, to play the scheduled premiere?episode of “So You Think You Can Dance.” All ten Florida FOX affiliates did not air the address for “Dance.”

I don’t often offer commentary on the main page, but your webmaster found this action, by FOX and their affiliates, truly insulting to America and it’s viewers, despite who the President is. This was a MAJOR address and should have been broadcast…FOX should be ashamed.

Below is a list of Florida FOX affiliates and their Obama address coverage:
