Jim Van Fleet files suit against former station/bosses…

(edited from TampaBay.com) – Former 10Weather WTSP chief meteorologist Jim Van Fleet has filed a lawsuit against his former TV station and two managers, claiming two managers there conspired to oust him from the job.

He claims the managers defamed him by spreading false rumors that he was using drugs and set him up for disciplinary action so they could name meteorologist Bobby Deskins as his replacement.

The lawsuit filed last month in Pinellas County Circuit Court describes Van Fleet as an “exemplary” employee since signing a five-year contract with the station in 2011. But four years into the contract — and one month after a positive performance review conducted by general manager Elliot Wiser — things started to go south for Van Fleet, the suit says. Chief Met Jim Van Fleet is out at WTSP…

UPDATE: Sources confirm to Florida News Center that indeed, Van Fleet’s contract was not renewed and that he and the station have parted ways. So there there is no word on who will replace him as the new Chief Met. Stay tuned.

FTVLive reports that WTSP Chief Meteorologist Jim Van Fleet is out at the Tampa station.

The website says that station GM “Bob Clickingbeard escorted Van Fleet out the door” Wednesday afternoon and his bio was quickly removed from the station’s website. There was no reason given for Van Fleet’s departure.

Anchor changes at WOFL…

Orlando’s WOFL has unveiled a new anchor lineup for all newscasts.

Current lead anchor Bob Frier (left) will move to the morning shift, to co-anchor with Amy Kaufeldt. LuAnne Sorrell will stay evening co-anchor along side the newly signed lead anchor Charles Billi (right #1). They will anchor evening newscasts at 5, 10 and 11 p.m.

Danielle Knox (right 2) joins the station to anchor the early morning shift 7-10a.m., along side Ryan Elijah.

Billi joins WOFL from Tampa, where he was most recently working as VP for a PR firm. He was anchor/reporter at WTSP and anchor at WSVN in Miami before that. Knox comes to WOFL from anchor/reporter at Miami’s WSVN. She worked on Lifetime Television and in Atlanta and other station’s in Miami before that.

Elliott Wiser is out as GM at WTSP…

Sources tell Florida News Center that WTSP VP/GM Elliott Wiser is out at the Tampa station.

The announcement came today via e-Mail from TEGNA Executive Vice President Peter Diaz…

“I have accepted Elliott Wiser’s resignation from the general manager position at WTSP. Elliott has decided to pursue other passions and we wish him well in his next endeavor. Additionally, we thank him for his many contributions to WTSP.”

The e-Mail went on to say that  TEGNA Sr VP Paul Trelstad will be positioned in the market to over see day-to-day operations at WTSP and keep “transformation efforts driving forward.” Trelstad will be introduced to the staff tomorrow morning at 10:30am. Read the rest of this entry →

Mark Collins back to WJXT…

(edited from WJXT Press Release) – Meteorologist Mark Collins returns to WJXT, in time for Hurricane Hermine coverage.  He was a fill-in meteorologist and a weather producer at WJXT from 2010-2011 and across town at the duopoly of WTLV/WJXX before that.

He left WJXT in 2011 to anchor weekend weather at WTSP in Tampa.  Recently he worked at the Florida Institute of Oceanography aboard research vessels studying Florida’s marine ecosystems. Read the rest of this entry →
