Give me football, not severe Wx coverage….

Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening proved to be a dangerous time for weather Florida. The National Weather Service had issued a historically rare PDS Alert (potentially dangerous situation). As the first dangerous line of storms rolled into the Tampa market, stations were popping in and out of syndicated network programming to cover the weather.

WTSP continuously dropped in and out of the AFC championship football game on CBS, much to the irritation of some viewers watching the Patriots vs. the Steelers. Those viewers, included one Twitter user across the Bay at WTVT. The following tweet was sent out in response to WTSP’s coverage.

Burn, baby, burn – 2016 – WTSP to air Yule Log…

For the fourth year in a row, Tampa’s WTSP will air its verison of the burning “Yule Log.” This year it air from 6:30-9:30a.m. on Christmas morning.

WTSP started airing the Yule Log in 2013, competing with similar offerings from 24hr cable channel Bay News 9 (and it’s sister station in Orlando, News 13). However, while 2013 was the first year for WTSP, it became the last year for BN9/News 13. After thirteen years (2001-2013) the cable channels put the fire out and killed the tradition for 2014.

The TV Yule Log tradition was started by New York station WPIX-TV, 50 years ago in 1966! That live stream can be found here.

We here at Florida News Center are happy to see the log still burns at WTSP – Merry Christmas to you all.

The lawsuit filed last month in Pinellas County Circuit Court describes Van Fleet as an “exemplary” employee since signing a five-year contract with the station in 2011. But four years into the contract — and one month after a positive performance review conducted by general manager Elliot Wiser — things started to go south for Van Fleet, the suit says.
